Director, NCE, Ms Bhanumathi G., IFS.

G. Bhanumathi, IFS, DirectorNon-Timber Forest Produce (NTFP) occupies an important place in the rural economy of Tripura and other north-eastern States. To address the issues concerning the sector including its development and value addition in a comprehensive manner, NTFP Centre of Excellence was established in 2008 under Tripura JICA Project, with the broad objectives of increasing productivity through supply of quality planting material & technical services, promoting livelihood improvement & poverty alleviation activities on an industrial scale and establishment of community common facility centres, capacity building of stakeholders and to facilitate marketing through public-private partnership.

The Centre has been envisaged to become a premier institution in its area of specialization, providing services not only within the State but also in the entire North-eastern Region in future. To begin with, the Centre with its lean structure has intervened in the area of research and production, resource survey, training & extension, value addition and marketing. Through facilitation of marketing of broom grass, the Centre has already created a niche in the area. The Centre would like to share with interested persons information relevant to NTFP so we can take the income generating activities from diffused value addition level to enterprise level.
To be truly a Centre of Excellence, we aim total customer satisfaction, continuous improvement and conscious and sustained efforts by both customers and the Centre as a service provider to achieve these. We strive for dissemination of information and awareness to target groups as an important strategy to achieve its objective with constructive exchange of views among stakeholders.
Experience gathered so far shows that there is already in existence a well thought-out, time-tested and very customized grass-root level institutions of JFMCs, whose potential can be harnessed to build up capacity for not only value addition & healthy trade in NTFP to the advantage of marginalized sections of the society, but also moulding opinions towards the larger objective of conservation of species diversity. The information provided in the website will be useful in generating awareness about NTFPs, the need to conserve them as a resource that are not inexhaustible, and will result into concrete time-bound action by the stakeholders and resource managers.
