Home herbal garden – essential for every household.

Home herbal garden is meant to cater for the daily herbal medicinal requirement and also the nutritional requirement of the individuals of all age groups in each household and it can be easily raised in every household having a vacant flat land of One Ganda ( 80 Sq. Meter i.e 8 m x 10 m area).

The following are essential in establishing a home herbal garden :
  1. The area of 80 Sq. Meter i.e 8 m x 10 m should be preferably a flat land and free from any vegetation for establishment of home herbal garden.
  2. The periphery of the home herbal garden should be properly fenced with bamboo fencing of at least 4 ft. height along with one gate made of bamboo.
  3. The waste water of the household may be used for irrigating the home herbal garden
  4. 18 numbers of beds of 2 m x 1 m size with lining of brick should be prepared, the soil should be properly pulverised and dry cow dung and sand should be mixed in the soil. Then the following medicinal herbal species should be planted in the beds as per the layout.
  5. Tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum ) Kalmegh (Andrographis paniculata )
    Pudina( Mentha arvensis Thankuni( Centella asiatica)
    Punarnava ( Boerhavia diffusa) Bhrami ( Bacopa monnieri)
    Methi (Trigonella foenum-graecum) Ghritakumari ( Aloe vera )
    Mishti tulshi ( Stevia rebaudiana) Kulekhara ( Hygrophila auriculata)
    Kharkan ( Typhonium trilobatum) Haldi (Curcuma longa)
    Kantikari (Solanum Xanthocarpum) Til ( Sesamum indicum)
    Nayantara ( Catharanthus roseus) Bhringaraj (Wedelia chinensis
    Patharkuchi (Bryophyllum pinnatum) Helencha ( Enydra fluctuans)
  6. The following medicinal tree species can be planted in pits of 30 cm x 30 cm x 30 cm size in a single row at 2 m spacing at the periphery of the selected piece of land as per layout
  7. 1. Neem ( Azadirachta indica ). 2. Barun ( Crataeva nurvala ).
    3.Curry patta ( Murraya koenigii ). 4.Jarul ( Lagerstroemia speciosa ).
    5.Bel ( Aegle marmelos ). 6.Arjun ( Terminalia arjuna ).
    13.Amlaki ( Emblica officinalis ) 15.Sajna ( Moringa oleifera ).
    7.Bahera ( Terminalia bellirica ). 8.Shefali ( Nyctanthes arbor-tristis ).
    9.Tej patta ( Cinnamomum tamala ). 10.Agar ( Aquilaria agallocha ).
    11.Kamranga ( Averrhoa carambola ) 12.Haritaki ( Terminalia chebula ).
    14.Ashok ( Saraca asoca ).
  8. fThe following medicinal shrubs and medicinal climber species can be planted in pits of 30 cm x 30 cm x 30 cm size in a single row at 1 m spacing at the periphery of the selected piece of land as per layout :
  9. 16.Jaba ( Hibiscus rosa-sinensis ). 17.Kalo Basak ( Justicia adhatoda ).
    18.Akanda ( Calotropis gigantea ). 23.Aparajita ( Clitoria ternatea ) *.
    24.Patal ( Trichosanthes dioica ) *. 25.Satamuli ( Asparagus racemosus ) *.
    19.Datura ( Datura stramonium ). 26.Kanchan ( Bauhinia variegata ).
    20.Bherenda ( Ricinus communis ). 27. Gandha badali ( Paedaria foetida ) *.
    21.Bakful ( Sesbania grandiflora ). 28.Shon kainch ( Abrus precatorius ) *.
    22.Nishinda ( Vitex negundo ). 29.Gulancha ( Tinospora cordifolia ) *.
    *Note : Necessary supporting structure made of bamboo is required for the medicinal climber species.
  10. No in-organic weedicides / insectides / pesticides should be used in the home herbal garden.
  11. The medicinal plants / plant products obtained from the home herbal garden should be consumed as per advice of a registered medicinal practitioner (Ayuvedic Doctor) only.
